Safety Wheel Drive simplifies payload mobility

IDEC has expanded its ez-Wheel product family with the new SWD Safety Wheel Drive for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). Stepper drives detect stalls in open-loop control mode

Automation-Direct has added the new Titanio series of stepper drives from Ever Motion Solutions. These drives offer peak performance, a rich feature set, and work seamlessly with AutomationDirect SureStep® stepper motors. Three new drives are available with two open-loop (no encoder feedback) models and one open/closed-loop version (a motor-mounted encoder provides position feedback to the drive). Unlike typical stepper drives, Titanio steppers can detect stalls in open-loop control mode by monitoring the motor's back EMF. This allows system designers to take advantage of stall detection without the hassle and expense of a closed-loop system.

Superconductivity motor: Airbus and Toshiba partner up as developers

Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, Toshiba Group's energy arm, have signed an agreement to cooperate on development of superconducting technologies to propel future hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Hydrogen-powered aircraft are one of the promising solutions to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Superconducting technologies offer a unique advantage for these aircraft, using -253-degree C liquid hydrogen as a fuel and also to efficiently cool the electric propulsion systems. Cryogenic technology could allow for a nearly unimpaired power transmission within the electric systems of the aircraft, significantly improving their energy efficiency and performance.

The partners aim to co-develop a 2-megawatt (MW) superconducting motor.

"Partnering with Toshiba presents a unique opportunity to push beyond the limitations of today's partial superconducting and conventional electrical motors," said Grzegorz Ombach, Airbus senior vice president and head of Disruptive R&T. "Through this collaboration, we aim to deliver a breakthrough technology that could unlock new design possibilities, in particular for Airbus' future hydrogen-powered aircraft. This partnership represents a natural and essential step in advancing superconducting motor technology to meet the needs of the aerospace industry."

Over the past 10 years, Airbus has made efforts to de-risk superconducting technologies. Recently, Airbus UpNext launched Cryoprop, a demonstrator to test a 2-MW-class superconducting electric propulsion system. Toshiba has been conducting research and development of superconducting technology applications for nearly half a century and released its own 2-MW-class superconductivity motor prototype for mobility applications in June 2022.

The Cryoprop demonstrator will integrate and mature a 2-MW-class superconducting electric propulsion system cooled by liquid hydrogen via a helium recirculation loop and developed by Airbus teams in Toulouse, France, and Ottobrunn, Germany. Airbus has been developing superconducting technologies for high-power electric propulsion for several years, culminating in the power-on of an integrated 500-kW cryogenic propulsion system in 2023.

Cryoprop will confirm the potential of superconducting technologies for future aircraft applications, assessing all aspects related to safety, industrialization, maintenance, and operations. The demonstrator will also give Airbus the opportunity to develop high-level, in-house expertise and foster a new ecosystem to accelerate the introduction of new products in areas such as superconducting cables, motors, cryogenic power electronics, and cryogenic cooling systems.
