SCHURTER's compact and powerful SMT chip fuse UST 1206 has enjoyed great popularity since its intro in 2008. In response to customer requests, SCHURTER has expanded this line with even more powerful versions with rated currents up to 35 A. The SCHURTER UST 1206 is a chip fuse for surface mounting with a "slow-blow" characteristic. This means it has a high melting integral, so the fuse does not trip immediately at inrush current peaks higher than the rated current. This is of great importance in many industrial applications (e.g. motors, power converters).

Rotary Systems has put together a really nice basic primer on slip rings -- electrical swivels that carry a current from a stationary wire into a rotating device. Common uses are for power, proximity switches, strain gauges, video, and Ethernet signal transmission. This introduction also covers how to specify, assembly types, and interface requirements. Rotary Systems also manufactures rotary unions for fluid applications.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) recently announced the location for its first fusion energy power plant, called ARC. It will be built in Chesterfield County, VA, an area near Richmond that has a growing economy, skilled workforce, and what the company calls "a big appetite for clean, firm energy."
Once online, the energy plant aims to be the first to provide fusion power in the world at grid scale. It plans to plug 400 megawatts (MW) of steady fusion power into the state's electrical grid starting in the early 2030s. The company expects ARC will create hundreds of jobs to build and operate the power plant.
The company is deep into building SPARC, a machine called a tokamak that'll demonstrate net fusion energy, a milestone called Q>1. Fusion power generates electricity by using heat from nuclear fusion reactions. Two lighter atomic nuclei are combined to form a heavier nucleus, releasing energy. This is the process that happens in our Sun. Unlike traditional nuclear plants, where atoms are split in a fission process, no nuclear waste is created in nuclear fusion. The process also provides inherently safe operations and no greenhouse gas emissions. Fusion creates heat in the tokamak, which is used to generate electricity.

Although the site has been chosen, CFS' next act is financing, building, owning, and operating the ARC power plant -- a big step to deliver fusion energy's promise. No company in the world has demonstrated sustained fusion operations to date.
CNN reported in April 2024 that a company in South Korea had "sustained temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius -- seven times hotter than the sun's core -- during a nuclear fusion experiment" for 48 seconds. The UK's Telegraph newspaper reported Feb. 2, 2025, that China is making strides in fusion also, constructing what looks like a fusion plant that is 50% larger than anything planned so far in the U.S., and the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced "that the country's scientists had run an 'artificial sun' -- a fusion drive aimed at replicating the star's reactions -- for 1,066 seconds."
If perfected, atom fusion promises to provide an almost limitless energy source.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems was co-founded by Bob Mumgaard (CEO) and five colleagues from MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center back in 2018. Mumgaard says most of the company's challenges have revolved around "developing an entire new magnet technology to enable commercially relevant fusion machines based on proven science." Magnets are used to help contain the incredibly hot plasma that is generated when atoms are fused together.
CFS will lease the ARC site from Dominion Energy Virginia.
Good luck, CFS. It's a mighty tall order.
