Will Genesis make a two-door muscle car? X Gran Coupe Concept

Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai, demonstrated it's not afraid to buck the SUV trend and bring back a little old-school flavor with the introduction of the X Gran Coupe Concept car -- a ripped version of the flagship G90 sedan -- at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025 in Goyang, Korea, earlier this month. There's a companion X Gran Convertible Concept too. Genesis has released very few details, but here is what we know so far.

The word on the street is these concepts are quite close to what a final production model would be, so there is a real chance that these two-doors -- a first for Genesis -- could hit the pavement. According to Genesis, "Both concepts demonstrate the brand's future position as an emotional luxury brand through distinct typologies." The cars could fill a specific niche, because other high-end automakers (some German ones come to mind, specifically) have discontinued some of their coupe lines.

Genesis has not detailed the powertrain for the X Gran Concepts, but since they are such close design derivatives of the G90 and were not introduced specifically as EVs, we think a slightly beefed-up version of the G90's twin-turbo, supercharged 3.5-L V6 engine putting out 409 hp+ would be a good bet. The concepts were not shown with the hallmark open-space flat floor (especially the tunnel-free center line) that most EVs exhibit today (look at the rear seat area in the convertible interior pic). An EV option down the line is still a possibility, though.

The front ends of X Gran Coupe Concept and X Gran Convertible Concept are adorned with Genesis' characteristic Two-Line headlights, which extend toward the iconic Genesis Crest Grille. The 3D grille meshes are inspired by woven metal strings arranged in diamond-shaped two-line patterns.

The wide lower air intakes with sculpted grille meshes emphasize the sporty character of the vehicles, while the elongated hoods create a dynamic silhouette. The widened two-line headlights extend to the fenders, visually enhancing the increased track width.

Both concepts feature more steeply raked windscreens and lower roof heights for the cabins, resulting in more aggressive silhouettes. The doors have been lengthened. Frameless windows slide down completely, revealing an uninterrupted window graphic. Also, the fenders have been widened to maximize the powerful presence of the cars. Aerodynamic wing sections finish the lower bodies, visually planting them firmly on the road.

In the X Gran Coupe Concept, the roof and cant rail have been visually integrated, shaping a cabin that resembles the canopy of sportscars. The beltline for the X Gran Convertible Concept is extended further back, dividing the body from the soft-top roof. In both concepts, the deep sections of the wheels, directly resulting from the widened track, creates a dramatic stance, while the positive surfaces have been enlarged to reinforce the muscles centered on the wheels.

At the rear, the bumper offsets have been smoothed out to create clean surfaces, accommodating the iconic two-line taillights. The brightwork extends to the lower rears of both vehicles, integrating wide, slim rectangular tailpipes.

Inside, the X Gran Coupe Concept features unique design elements that Genesis says were inspired by Mediterranean olive trees. The entrance experience is elevated with a door sill plate bearing the model's name. Specially designed floor mats, adorned with olive leaf motifs, complement a tunnel section enriched with quilted stitching inspired by automotive heritage. The olive wood veneer is microperforated to create olive-themed atmosphere lighting. There's a lot of Genesis leather, including a fully quilted leather roof.

The X Gran Convertible Concept goes with a fine-wine theme, with an exterior color reminiscent of pressed grapes and an interior color that echoes the deep, rich hues of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Kelley Blue Book has a look at the cars on the show floor at the reveal, and the interiors, especially, look way more sumptuous! See that video here.

To pump up the "Cheers!" vibe, there are crystal details on both models inside, such as on the steering wheel, center console, and ventilation systems. There is also a steering wheel that features a refined aluminum third bottom spoke. The front seatbacks feature integrated displays for rear passengers.

Will the Genesis' X Gran Concepts make it to market? We will have to wait and see. A base 2025 G90 starts at around $91,000, and the supercharged version is 10 grand more, so add a little to these figures for a ballpark price.
