Brembo says it can cut brake disc wear by 80% -- and drastically limit brake dust too

The brake experts at Brembo have cooked up a new OEM vehicle brake technology they say can slash disc wear drastically and cut brake dust emissions by up to 90% too.

The company says its new Greentell brake set (a mix of the words green and intelligence), which debuted at the Auto Shanghai 2025 show at the beginning of May, consists of a new disc and pads featuring superior performance, increased durability, corrosion resistance, and reduced emissions. The brakes are suitable for all types of vehicles, from NEV (New Energy Vehicle) to combustion engines, from premium cars to light commercial vehicles.

What's the new brake set's secret? The innovation behind Greentell is the application of a patent-pending, dual-layer, nickel-free coating on the discs using Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), which is a 3D-printing technology. Brembo has been refining this technology for a long time, seamlessly integrating LMD into its production plants, while continuously expanding its expertise in the study of emissions, to define more innovative solutions for the braking industry.

According to Motor1.com, "Brembo applies this dual-layer coating after the machining process and before the final finishing."

The application of the double coating layer through the LMD process significantly increases the resistance and durability of the disc, without compromising performance. This coating can be applied to different types of discs including integral, dual cast, lightweight, and floating. When coupled with the unique pads, Brembo says the technology "ensures a reduction of surface wear by 80% as compared to an equivalent, uncoated cast iron disc."

Additionally, the Greentell set drastically reduces brake dust emissions during braking by up to 90%, which should put the technology in a good place considering the upcoming Euro 7 brake system emission regulations that will come into effect in 2026. Brembo says it has also developed its own dust measurement test bench, one of the most advanced for the study of particulate emissions.

The Greentell disc also boasts another handy feature: Easy Check. Each disc is marked with the Brembo logo (which can be customized with a carmaker logo instead). When the Easy Check image fades from the braking surface, motorists will know it is time to replace the disc. With so much of the brake dust reduced, the Easy Check logo should be easy to see.

According to Motor1.com, the new discs "should last about 20 to 30 percent longer than their cast-iron equivalents."
